How to Get Involved

The Lothian Diary Project is now closed to new submissions

Thank you to everyone who took part in the project!

If you are currently staying in Edinburgh or the Lothians, follow the  steps below to tell us how the Covid-19 pandemic has been affecting you.

If you are under 16, or unable to give your own consent, you can take part, as long as someone can consent on your behalf.

Remember that you can support one of our charity partners simply by taking part, and at no extra cost to you! See our Community page for more details on supporting our charity partners.

When you’re ready to begin, click “Get started!” on the right.

Grab your phone (or whatever device you want to use) and tell us all about your lockdown experiences. Your recording can be in any language. Recordings that are 5+ minutes are best!

Here are a few ideas of things you could talk about:

  • How has your life changed during lockdown?
  • What was a typical day like before lockdown, and what’s it like now?
  • What’s been the hardest part for you during lockdown?
  • Have you learned any new skills or taken up any new hobbies?
  • Have you been working from home? Has it been challenging?
  • Have there been any bright spots about the lockdown?
  • Who are you in lockdown with, and how are they doing?

You don’t have to talk about these at all; just talk about what’s important to you. For practical tips, click here.

You can include other people in your recording but there are a few extra things to think about, so have a look at our FAQ page first.

When you click “Participate in this project”, you will be asked to choose the correct version of the survey for you.

Once you choose the appropriate one for you, you will be directed to a page where you’ll be able to send us your audio/video diary, and complete the survey questions.

To start off, you will be asked to complete a consent form telling us how you’d like your diary and your survey answers to be used. Your contributions will remain totally private and anonymous unless you request otherwise. (See “What will happen to the information I give you?” on our FAQ page).

After completing the consent form you’ll be asked to upload your audio or video diary. (Note: Only use this for your first upload(s). If you want to send us further recordings later, please get in touch by e-mail instead.)

On this screen, you’ll also be shown a unique ID number (video ID), which you’ll need to enter into a box the uploader so that we can match your recording to your survey answers.

We will need to check that you have completed both the survey and uploaded a recording in order to pay you.

Note: Longer diaries and slower internet connections will mean it takes longer to upload. (This might be the time to put the kettle on…!)

After you’ve uploaded your video, we will ask you a few questions to help us better understand your experiences. It should take about 15-25 minutes to complete.

At the end of the survey, we will offer you £15. You can choose to receive £15 directly via bank transfer, or as a voucher for a local business of your choice. Alternatively, you can choose for us to donate the £15 to support the work of your favourite charity.

At this stage, we will also ask you to choose one of our charity partners whom you’d like us to donate an extra £5 to. A list of our charity partners can be found on our Community page. Doing this will not affect your £15 payment!

At this point, you can also refer someone else to take part in the project. If they do, you’ll receive an extra £5!
